150 words
Huáscar Barradas is a flutist, composer, arranger and music producer, and one of the originators of Venezuelan neo-folklore: the movement that fuses tradition with the contemporary. Born in Maracaibo in 1964, he trained at conservatoires and universities in Venezuela, the United States and Europe. He was co-principal flute of the Venezuela National Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Caracas Municipal Symphony Orchestra, and is a founding member of El Sistema in its Zulia chapter. In 2023 he won the Latin Grammy for Best Classical Album with «Huáscar Barradas Four Elements Immersive Symphony For Orchestra And Chorus», recorded with the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the National Choir. He had been nominated twice before, in 2011 and 2013. He has released twenty-one albums, performed in more than twenty-five countries, and shared the stage with Miguel Bosé, Chavela Vargas, Simón Díaz, Oscar D’León and Guaco, among others.
The full biography

How to cite it correctly

  • It is a Latin Grammy, awarded by the Latin Recording Academy. It is not the United States Grammy, awarded by the Recording Academy: two different awards from two different organisations.
  • He won ONE, in 2023, in the Best Classical Album category. It was presented on 16 November 2023 at the 24th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, held in Seville.
  • He has TWO previous nominations, not three: 2011 and 2013. The figure of «three nominations» circulates in older promotional material and is not supported by any source giving a year and a work.
  • The winning album is credited on streaming platforms to the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and the National Choir, not to Huáscar Barradas as lead artist. He is the composer and the soloist.
  • Encyclopaedic entries are out of date. As of today the English Wikipedia mentions only the two nominations and does not record the 2023 win; the Spanish Wikipedia does not mention the award at all; and Wikidata carries no «award received» statement. He did win: the press coverage from that night is linked below.
